The food and service were as good as it could possibly be. We had wag you beef and kimchi dumplings with sushi as an appetizer, and both were incredible. The spices and sauces were amazing. My wife and I celebrated our 2nd anniversary and Roka Akor was amazing. We both enjoyed the food and the service was outstanding. Thank you so much for making it a night to remember! Food was mediocre and service, although friendly and attentive, was not knowledgeable. Waited 20 minutes for the cocktail only to be told it was 86'd.
They did acknowledge it was our anniversary which was nice, but the food was so disappointing that we opted for the check before dessert. Definitely not worth the price. Inside was a bit loud, but very cool atmosphere. Billed as a tapas restaurant, we were excited to try lots of different plates. Size of tapas plates is generous.
Menu has pretty good options. I was a bit disappointed by flavors of the food we ordered. Some of the fish seemed bland; tempura was mediocre. Sushi was interesting and full of flavor. I've now heard that beef is the major thing bringing lots of folks in. I would probably say that if you're not a beef eater like me and my wife, consider other dining options. But for drinks and lite appetizers, I'd recommend this place. Beef eaters, look to other reviews for better appreciation of the full menu. What an incredible experience.
We would eat here again in a heartbeat. The food was amazing, several dishes we could had more of at that sitting. Presentation was great and elaborately explained. Each course was unique. Eaten here numerous times, always a good meal with exceptional service. Quality ingredients and careful preparation. I'm at the point I simply talk to the waitstaff, tell them what I'm in the mood for and let them make suggestions. Most of the waitstaff has been there several years so they are familiar with the menu and have an incentive to suggest courses that will have you coming back for more.
Makes for an enjoyable dining experience IMHO. In particular, ask for Anthony. He knows his stuff. Our server Anthony was very knowledgeable and accommodated my wife's special food requests. Awesome food even better service from the wait staff all the way to the general manager. Perfect dining experience , Cant wait to go back!! My girlfriend and I visited Roka Akor for our anniversary.
I made reservations in advanced, yet when we arrived the hostess tried to sit us in the bar area right next to the door. When I asked for a different table the hostess seemed annoyed even though I was polite in my request for another table. The food at Roka Akor was what I expected, but nothing that 'wowed'. Pair that with my poor experience from the beginning and it didn't add up to the experience I had hoped for.
I would recommend several different restaurants to my friends before Roka Akor. We've been here many times over the years and while always expensive, we always felt the portions, preparation, and quality made up for the high prices. Although the food is flavorful, the portions are extremely small for the prices charged. We both had fish entrees as main dishes. It was could not have been more than 3 oz. No side dish included, just garnish. At over 30 dollars a plate, that is not acceptable. Service was Ok but not overly attentive a side dish we ordered had burned on the grill mushrooms and did not come out with our entree, nothing was said until we summoned the waiter.
Not sure we will be returning. The food, the service and the atmosphere was superb! The food had so much flavor and was prepared just right. What a great decision! We both had the Bento box lunch, allowing us to sample different items on the menu. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and made suggestions.
The manager came to our table to make sure all was well. Overall a great first experience for me. GREAT food!!! Highly recommend coming here, especially for a nice date night or something. Definitely get the lamb cutlets with Korean spices and the butterfish cold plate. And the edamame! We also tried the wagyu beef dumplings - also very good but not so much a 'must have.
After fixing, it was very good. Would have been 5 stars if not for that. The service at Roka Akor was phenomenal. The waitstaff was knowledgable about the food and drink menu and was quite attentive. The food was excellent all around. An excellent restaurant all around. We went there for my birthday. My friends told them it was so they brought out dessert with candles at the end. No singing which I loved, not too embarrassed. The food was great and it is a great place to people watch and meet people, not so much for a quiet evening talking though.
The food here is some of the most delicious and high quality I've ever had anywhere. I will definitely be back! I wanted to take my boyfriend out for a nice dinner to celebrate a work-related training program he worked hard at. I asked if we could get a more 'regular' dining room table; the hostess basically said 'no problem' and reseated us immediately. That was great. I'm glad we did, because for a special night and how much we spent, I'm glad we were in the main dining room. When we left, I saw the people eating their meals in the bar seating area and it just looked cramped and not-comfortable.
Holy crap. We were told it was a tasting menu, so we'd get small portions of a few things. For our first course, we had I believe plates. Then the sushi tasting was a giant, beautifully arranged platter, served with freshly grated wasabi. Every piece of sushi was amazing. The seafood course was the cod, and oh. One of the most delicious seafood dishes I've ever had. Then the meat course had bone marrow not a lot, but very rich , and a big piece of steak I forget what cut of meat, but it was soooo delicious and plenty for us to share PLUS a side of the rice hot pot AND grilled bok choy!
At this point, we were literally almost stuffed to capacity, but had the dessert course. Ours came with the chocolate lava cake can you ever go wrong with this and banana and green tea cake of sortsI can't stand bananas, but the green tea foam on top wasn't bad. It also came with two small servings of fruit sorbet and also fresh cut fruit.
I would definitely recommend this place!! This is a truly special dining experience. The menu is diverse and creative with options for all. The wait staff is beyond knowledgable and excellent with explanations and recommendations. The presentation is memorable and the ambiance perfect for business and for special occasions. Chef created a wonderful group dinner for my guests who had dietary restrictions. Waiter was also mindful of the restrictions.
The meal was delectible! First time at this restaurant. Great meal, cocktail selection and ambience. Server was extremely helpful with recommendations for sushi and non-sushi diners. Give it a try! We picked Roka Akor as a last-minute choice because we had to drive up to Chicago for business. We were not disappointed in the food, which is high end 'Japanese fusion', with excellent sashimi, and grilled fish and steak.

Do not expect authentic Japanese, this is not what Roka Akor is about. The cocktails were very nice, and there is an extensive selection of sake. Our waiter steered us well towards a truly exceptional bottle. Service was fast sometimes too fast , and attentive in spite of the fact that the place was buzzing.
Noise levels too high for our comfort, we are more at ease with subdued conversations and soft background music. I was here during Restaurant Week and had lunch.
The food was impressive with just enough touch of creativity. I love the trendy ambience. Highly recommend it! Daughters 16th birthday. Food and service were excellent. Great time. Thank you Roka Akor. Great staff, who help navigate the menu for some great suggestions.
Enjoyable experience. The service was excellent. I communicated with their manager before coming and they were very kind and helpful. I wouldn't think twice before returning. All the sushi maki rolls were amazing, especially the attention to freshness, and the house made sauces, the soy sauce Never let me down! Always the best sushi place in town!
About Roka Akor - Chicago
Wagyu beef from robata was amazing! Love Roka! Last night was my first time dining in the Downtown location of Roka Akor I have spent a lot of time in the Old Orchard location which is also amazing. Roka is the dining experience everyone should treat themselves to at some point. From the time we walked into the door to the time we left, every moment was memorable. Our table was not quite ready so Mr.
Tindle directed us to the bar for a signature cocktail while we waited, I sipped on the 'Comeback Kid' Gin with Rosemary it was incredible. I also brought in my own bottle of wine and Mr. Tindle decanted and served it tableside for us himself. He took his time, gave awesome recommendations, and was knowledgeable on every question we had. Then we enjoyed the Wild Mushroom salad, Shrimp and Lobster Dumplings, and finished our small plates course with the Wagyu Beef Tataki this was like eating butter the way it melted in my mouth.
I was honored to have one of the Executive Chef's Chef Boyd visit my table and make sure we were enjoying the experience. The bone-in flavor was earthy and complex, over-all so pleasing to the palate. Best service I've ever had in Chicago. Best sushi, everything. Anthony and Ryan were awesome. We will be back!! Do not go as a single party: Both were not ideal, but the hostess seemed to relegate individuals who were eating alone to worse tables than parties of 2.
Many hole-in-the-wall places in New York I go to have better sushi. The salmon was stringy and chewy; it should melt in your mouth if it is truly excellent.
Roka Akor - Chicago
At Brushstroke or Masa in New York, for instance, this is how the sushi is. Went here to relive some good memories with a close friend. Presentation here is amazing, everything you order feels like every detail is cared for. Service was a bit slow in the beginning but because the menu is so varied it gave plenty of time to look over what you wanted and settle into the ambiance of the restaurant.
Always cheerful and great sense of timing for what you needed. After ordering everything came out in perfect pacing so as to truly enjoy the meal. I only wish I could come back more often. Another exceptional meal. Lobster tempera outstanding. Exceptional sashimi choices. The variety of ingredients and cooking or not methods and presentation are a treat.
The pace was perfect, service attentive and wait staff knowledgeable about the often complex dishes. The wasabi was freshly grated from the root of the plant and not the ubiquitous green horseradish. Don't skip the desert. Fresh fruit, sorbet, and Japanese dishes likely unfamiliar to most Amerikahito. Second time and it still does an amazing job preparing seafood and grilling beef and lamb in any way you would like it.
The service is attentive but not rushed. The servers know the offerings well and take care to match each diner's preferences with the offerings. Whether traditional or unusual, raw or grilled there is much here to be offered. The ingredients are the star and the presentation masterful. As good for a business meeting as a romantic evening.
As usual, dinner at Roka was superb. Excellent quality food and a great place to spend a Saturday night. However, our server gave us a plain tuna roll maki instead of the spicy tuna roll we requested. Unfortunately, that part of the order was to-go, and we only discovered it upon arriving home. Otherwise, a solid dining experience. Roka Akor made my friend's bday celebration more special by providing sparkling wine to start and a great ube custard dessert at the end - on the house.
We will definitely return because of their great service and great food. We arrived early for our reservation on Christmas Eve, seated right away. Genial server admitted to being new to the job but answered all our questions and took good care of us. Food was beyond delicious; the five-course chef's choice was a great choice for us as our familiarity with Japanese food is limited to the normal sushi dishes. We liked not being entirely sure what was coming out, but it was all outstanding.
Presentation blew us away. The oxtail rice bowl, grilled sea bream, big eye tuna sashimi, fried lemon sole, and the rib eye with WaFu sauce were standouts, though everything was terrific. The sashimi platter was almost too pretty to eat but we did so anyway: The manager stopped by to introduce himself and we put in a good word for the new waiter.
We'll be back many times. Well done, Roka Akor! Truly a five-star experience. After a recommendation from a Chicago friend, I made reservations for a girls-night-out for our weekend trip to Chicago. We got the lobster and crab potstickers and calamari as well as 3 sushi rolls. The salmon avocado was good as well as their signature rolls. It is a little pricey but it has fun atmosphere and we enjoyed our night almost closed down the place. Good food. They changed the Sochu glass, smaller and not as elegant. My first time there, ordered off the special restaurant week menu, and it was lovely.
Not too much, not too little and the wine pairings which were extra were lovely too. Our server was good and attentive Anthony I believe was his name and his suggestions were great. Highly recommend asking for Anthony, he offered great service and amazing recommendations. We had such a great time at the bar with drinks and light food that we came back the next night for dinner. The attention to service and the quality of the food are amazing.
It's a fun place to be where you are meant to feel comfortable while enjoying the beautiful ambiance, attentive service and great food. First time tonight wow. Had chef tasting menu. Perfect bites of fish and tremendous steak What a treat. Good wine list. I've been here a handful of times, but this review is for my latest visit.
Typically, the food is very good -- the steak, seafood, everything. But this time, everything we ordered was poor. The ribs were low quality; the steak was chewy. I hope it's a one-time aberration but I doubt I head back to find out. Roka consistently delivers really good sushi. I have never had a miss there. And that is not a tepid review. It is hard to find a sushi restaurant where you haven't had an off-night, or just ok sushi. Without exaggeration, I have never had a bad meal there or been disappointed in a meal.
Whether in a group or just a 2-top, the service if great too. My last visit I took my 11 year old son - who is a great sport about food - and everyone was wonderful to us. We were there early, of course, but still, the host table, our waiter, the bus service - it was a great dinner. I'm picky about sushi but this was an outstanding experience, as usual.
Always a perfect dining experience in every way imaginable hostess, server, food, ambience.

We always love coming here when we are in town. We were there on a Monday night, so it was pretty quiet and low key. We had a very nice time. The food was amazing and the staff was very friendly. We were there for my daughters birthday and the birthday dessert was beautiful and delicious. Roka Akor was awesome. The plates are great for groups looking to share dishes with each other or for individuals that want to hog the deliciousness for themselves.
The waitress was helpful and kind and split the check without error. There were plenty of options and it was overall fantastic. Food was very good and innovative, service outstanding and nice space. This place is unbelievable. We'll be back for a honeymoon treat in August Fabulous to celebrate a special occasion. Great good and exceptional service. The noise level could have been knocked down a notch to have decent conversation with our friends and especially while trying to listen to the server.
They accommodated to us very well: Our waiter Casey was outstanding We had one person in the group who was a strict vegetarian.

Casey went out of his way and prepared a special dish not on the menu. What a great experience. Everything was fabulous. I can't wait to go back!! All were well liked by who ate them. The menu is definitely meant for shared plates and we did it dishes per person not shared by everyone which worked well size wise but they staggered everything so for instance I was done with all my food before some people even got theirs because of how early it came. Our waitress was very nice and gave some suggestions of things to do in the city. The downsides are that it is very very loud and a bit hard to hold a conversation with a large group.
We had a reservation for 6 and when we got there the hostess said the group at our table was just finishing dessert so it could be awhile so the only other option was a long high top right next to the bar- it was loud, and we smelled cigarette smoke and another kind of smoke several times which was pretty off putting, may have been better in the dining room. I have been many times and all the staff are attentive and polite. Food is remarkable and the place is beautiful.
Jorge at the bar is a great bartender. This restaurant never disappoints. We had a variety of dishes, all chosen by the chef and based on preferences we shared. It was terrific!! This spot was new to me, but it doesn't dissapoint in any way! Just amazing. We ordered the decadent chef's tasting and it did not disappoint. The appetizers were delicious and the sashimi was so flavorful and fresh! Delicious from start to finish, and the cocktails were great too.
The service was so accommodating, they even sat us elsewhere when a party sat down nearby our original table wearing too much perfume. Will definitely return! I've been wanting to stop in for a while now, finally had a date willing to check it out with me, and we LOVED it. Food is amazing! The ambiance was great. Service was noticeably wonderful! Already told my best friend she has to come here. Awesome food sea bass was one of the best I have ever tried great drinks, outstanding service - attentive, friendly and professional staff, courses were very well-timed.
The food is always impeccable. And they are willing to work with you should you not like or allergic to a particular ingredient, their kitchen is flexible to make the dishes exactly the way you like them. Roka is becoming my favorite restaurant! Service is terrific all around! I was expecting good and got amazing! This lamb is busting with flavor. The crispy brussel sprouts are really good. This is a must try spot when in Chicago.
Amazing staff and excellent service. Aaron took great care of us. We chose the Omasake dinner which put us in the chefs hands. Great decision! Every course was perfect. They even brought out a real wasabi root and hand ground the wasabi for our sashimi. Everything was spectacular except the Waitress' recommended Roll, which was pretty bad.
Id go back - i think it was an anomaly given the very high quality of the rest of the food. Excellent food - not a big fan of Japanese food except here; Wildrice Hotpot is one of the best dishes I've ever had; very good intro to Japanese sauces and great veggie options.
Very nice restaurant with very good food. The service was outstanding, if you do not like a dish they are happy to make sure you recieve something else that you do like. Food was delicious as always!
The plates were incredibly small but the food was delicious. Was there for a Valentines day dinner. The food was awesome and had a romantic ambiance. It was a little loud but the dark lighting and comfortable chairs made for a great feel. The food exceeded our high expectations. We also split the lamb cutlets which was my favorite dish. Our server Jason was attentive and well informed.
He made a great recommendation on dessert, with the green tea custard, which we never would have ordered normally but it was fantastic. The only downside was, because we were there on valentines day there were some menu items that were not available to make room for the Prix Fixe menu. The sea bass was excellant. We also ordered a few sushi rolls that were not anything to speak of - nothing special.
I would go back for the sea bass and I would like to try their steak. Nothing special. We had a great dinner at Roka! There were 6 of us celebrating a birthday. The waiter made some great suggestions. We were going to have our non sushi eater order a steak but he decided to go in with us and LOVED it! Ben, the general manager, was exceptional as was our server. I had received an email from Ben confirming our reservation and letting me know to contact him if there was anything I needed. I replied letting him know we we're celebrating my wife's birthday. We were provided a few extras that made our experience just that much better!
Food was served quickly and was delicious! The food was excellent and the service was impeccable! The chef's tasting menu was amazing and really allowed us to experience a wide variety of menu items. Our waiter was Anthony and he the best service we have probably ever had at a restaurant. He is very knowledgeable and was able to make recommendations based on asking a few questions about our preferences. Everything was absolutely perfect! The manager there were two on Sunday night but I'm talking about the shorter gentleman was the man! I couldn't say enough about his level of service and attentiveness!
Our server was equally awesome. These guys need a raise asap!!! We were visiting from San Diego, otherwise this would easily be a weekly visit. Since coming home I haven't stop raving about our experience here. Can't wait to come back! We have friends that are visiting Chicago at the end of the month and had to make sure we grab cards so they know where the best spot in Chicago is! Can't wait to come back thanks you making our vacation memorable. By any standard, exceptional in all ways. Outstanding and interesting food. Exceptional ambiance and service. Can't wait to return!
Had to find a place with a great menu and an extensive wine list to meet an old college friend. This was the perfect place for our annual get-together! Great food, fabulous service, great wines and plenty of time to spend catching up. We were never rushed and each course of the food was better than the first. Even the sorbet was exceptional! I would highly recommend this place and will certainly be back when I am in town. I had the opportunity to visit your Arizonia restaurant a few years ago. Had a wonderful meal. When planning my trip to Chicago I saw that you had a restaurant there.
We had to send a few thinks back since they were prepared with items we asked to be left out. Join Facebook to connect with Jennifer Pyster and others you may know.
